One of the most common causes of sleep apnea is being overweight.  According to Harvard Health, losing just 10% of your body weight can improve sleep apnea conditions and in some cases cure it altogether.

At Lifetime Wellness we can share that we’ve had so much success with our weight loss programs in Milwaukee and Mequon areas, and it is not uncommon for our clients to say they sleep much better now. A number of our clients have shared that they don’t use their CPAP machine anymore.

Just what is Sleep Apnea or Sleep Apnoea?

According to Wikipedia, the definition is “Sleep apnea, also spelled sleep apnoea, is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep.[1] Each pause can last for a few seconds to a few minutes and they happen many times a night.[1] In the most common form, this follows loud snoring.[2] There may be a choking or snorting sound as breathing resumes.[1] As the disorder disrupts normal sleep, those affected may experience sleepiness or feel tired during the day.”

Even if you haven’t experienced sleep apnea, based on the definition alone you can see why this is such a challenging condition. Not only is it hard for the person who has sleep apnea but it can be difficult for their partner as well. Being woken up by snoring or dealing with a partner who hasn’t slept well and is constantly fatigued or in a bad mood can put a strain on a relationship.

How Does Weight Contribute?

The link between being overweight and having obstructive sleep apnea has been established in the medical and scientific communities. People who are overweight tend to have excess tissue in the back of the throat with can block the air passage when they lay down.

CPAP (Continuous Postive Airway Pressure) Machines help improve sleep apnea but forcing air into the airways to keep them open while you sleep. CPAP machines can bring relief to those who suffer from sleep apnea but they do not cure sleep apnea.

We are not telling you to ditch your CPAP machine. Before you do so we encourage you to speak with your trusted medical professional. We do know that losing weight has not only scientifically been proven to help improve or cure sleep apnea but we’ve personally seen our clients experience this as a result of losing weight through our program.
