There is so much unknown in the world right now with the widespread panic about COVID-19.  We want to stay on top of sharing some precautionary measures to help keep you and your family safe.  In our office, we have implemented increased hygiene routines, monitoring and operations protocols and are following the clinical procedures outlined by high level clinical organizations and our medical directors.  Current recommendations for the prevention of all viruses including the Coronavirus are routine, thorough, hygiene measures. Now more than ever, we need to make sure we are taking proper care of ourselves and educating ourselves on the facts of what being healthy actually means.  Handling situations like this is never easy and there isn’t one right answer but it is important to know about the virus and the steps to prevent it from spreading.   The more you take care of yourself the better it will be for you, your family, and for your community.  We, as a country, want to get this under control as soon as possible and stop the virus from spreading so we encourage you to listen to the guidelines that the government is enforcing.  

The virus spreads airborne from person-to-person between people who are in close contact with one another, estimated to be about 6 feet in distance.  The CDC reports that it is through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.  These droplets can also land on surfaces which can then be transmitted to the body through direct contact with one’s face after they’ve touched a contaminated surface. The virus will survive on metal surfaces for approximately 12 hours.  So when you touch metal surfaces such as handles, doors, appliances, supports on trams, etc., wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitizer. The virus can live nested in clothes and fabrics for about 6/12 hours. Normal detergents can kill it.  For clothes that cannot be washed every day, if you can expose them to the sun the virus will die.  

The CDC recommends that you be aware of your surroundings and avoid close contact with people who are sick. Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, stay home if you’re sick, and disinfect surfaces that are touched often and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.  The virus only survives on your hands for about ten minutes, but in ten minutes many things can happen: rub your eyes or scratch your nose for example, and allow the virus to enter your throat. Keep your hands away from your face as much as possible. There’s no true prediction of the impact of COVID-19 as of now.  But there are numerous things you can be doing to help yourself stay healthy and prepared. 

Steps to take to stay healthy:

  • Gut health.  This is something that so many people don’t give much thought to.   Gut health is VERY important in fighting common sickness and is considered the home base for all of the bacteria that affects your physical and mental health.   In the gut, the “good” bacteria does so much more than keep the “bad” bacteria in check. It also helps with kidney and heart function, as well as brain health. The more good bacteria in your digestive tract the less mucus is created in your body which in turn causes less colds, infections, and in general promotes a healthier day to day life.   Your microbiome is the balance of microbes, including gut bacteria, in your body. Experts are saying that a quality good night’s sleep is essential in keeping you healthy.
